Only J.R. Smith… The Cleveland Cavaliers guard was on the bench with a sore left hamstring during their preseason game against the Memphis Grizzlies. During the game he decided he wanted some cotton candy so he got up and bought some from a vendor in the stands.
He actually bought two; one for himself and one for a fan.
So who was this mysterious fan Smith bought cotton candy for? According to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, it was golfer Jason Day’s son.
Cavs coach David Blatt didn’t even know Smith had purchased the cotton candy as the Cavs shooting guard spent the night at the end of the bench, one of five Cleveland players out for the night because of an injury.
“I wasn’t aware of that,” Blatt said when asked about Smith’s cotton candy fix after the game. “You know, I’m going to use one of those lines that you always use when there’s something that happens. The team’s immediate response is: We are gathering further information and we will respond accordingly. I’m going to lay my hat on that one, if I may.”
Shortly after Blatt’s remarks, a Cavs team official said that Smith was purchasing the cotton candy for the son of professional golfer Jason Day, who was seated by the Cavs bench. Day’s wife, Ellie, is from Lucas, Ohio and a Cleveland sports fan. The couple sat courtside for Game 3 of the NBA Finals in June.
Day flew from South Korea after finishing the Presidents Cup on Sunday back to Ohio to catch the Cavs game Monday. Smith, an avid golfer in his free time, has befriended Day since he was traded to Cleveland from New York last season.
