After spending almost fifteen years in the league, we’ve seen some different sides of Smith, but in a video explaining his departure from the NFL, he explains that he is making a change,

“on my own terms.”

Smith was drafted to the Panthers in 2001 and played 14 seasons for the Carolina team. He will finish his last season as a Raven.

The 36-year old, father of four has made the decision to end his own career in hopes to spend more time with his children and share irreplaceable moments with them, something that not all players have the luxury of doing.

“You don’t have to stare down death, to know what kind of values you want to instill in your kids.”

Family time is one of the many painful sacrifices made by professional athletes and Smith would not be the first, nor the last to make a retirement decision driven by personal reasons.

Though his explosive presence on the field will be missed, Smith says he is ready for a change.

No official statement has been made by the Ravens, who will host the Bengals on Sunday at one o’clock.
