After a month long investigation by state police, a Newark man was arrested Wednesday after he was found with more with 3,700 bags of heroin.
Lavar Jackson, 25, was arrested after a brief struggle with state police detectives at Christiana Mall, Master Cpl. Jeffrey R. Hale said.
Jackson was the focus of an investigation targeting the sale of heroin, and in addition to the 1,299 bags of heroin found on his person, he was carrying about $500 in suspected drug proceeds, Hale said.
The following day, Jackson’s rental unit at a local storage facility was searched and another 2,472 bags of heroin were found, as well as a Mossberg 22 gauge sawed off shotgun, a .357 caliber revolver, a 9mm semiautomatic handgun, a .44 magnum revolver, a .380 semiautomatic handgun, a 9mm revolver, various ammunition and supplies used to store large amounts of heroin, Hale said.
One of the recovered firearms also was reported stolen to the New Castle County Police Department while a second had been reported stolen to the Maryland State Police, Hale added.
Jackson was charged with four counts of drug dealing, three counts of possession of heroin in a Tier 5 quantity, possession of heroin in a Tier 1 quantity, five counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, five counts of possession of a firearm by a person prohibited, two counts of receiving a stolen firearm, possession of a destructive weapon, resisting arrest and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Jackson also is a convicted felon and prohibited from owning a firearm, Hale said.
Lacking $254,000 cash bail for his arrest and another $382,500 secured bail following the search warrant, Jackson was committed to Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington.
