For the newest issue of Hypetrak magazine, we get some behind-the-scenes scoop as Quincy talks to Kendrick about the blend of hiip-hop and jazz, Thriller sessions with Michael Jackson, and the origin of rap. While most of us would automatically let the Bronx roll off of our lips, Quincy would be quick to stop you.
“Shit,” he says to the Compton rapper. “It came from Africa, but the don’t know their history.” The legend adds, “you get to where you’re going easier if you know what came before you.” Hmm, who’s one to argue with a man with half of a century in the music industry; no one.
Watch the talk rap some knowledge in the video below.
Jones and K. Dot also discuss the struggles of growing up in the center of violent war zones; Kendrick in Compton and Jones in Chicago, circa the 1930s.
“That’s my medal,” Quincy says as he points to a scar on his hand. “Seven years old, wrong neighborhood; they took a switchblade and nailed my hand to a fence. I almost died. And you think it’s heavy now? Shit.”
As if this isn’t deep enough, K. Dot and the cultural and generational icon Jones get even deeper. Check out the detail of their conversation; here.
