This is a quiet time of year for NBA news with the NFL kicking off and baseball getting close to the playoffs. With that said, sometimes writers and reporters almost have to search for news that really isn’t there. After all the summer rumors about free agency and trades die down, basketball news (usually) gets quiet until about October but here we are with Carmelo Anthony trade rumors already.

The New York Knicks signed Carmelo Anthony to a five-year contract in the 2014 offseason, and the All-Star forward is now in a strange place. The Knicks won 17 games last season, selected project big man Kristaps Porzingis with the No. 4 overall pick and then used the offseason to sign non-stars Arron Afflalo and Robin Lopez. It’s hard to believe it was as recently as 2012-13 that the Knicks went 54-28 and seemed to be an emerging force in the Eastern Conference.

Some say that he and the Knicks would be better off without each other, and Grantland’s Zach Lowe indicated — in a piece about Markieff Morris, strangely enough — that the franchise is “getting closer” to exploring that possibility:

The Kings and Knicks should take a look, even though neither has movable assets that would interest Phoenix — unless the Knicks are ready to engage in Carmelo Anthony trade talks. (They’re not there, yet. But they’re getting closer.)

I hope fans realize that just because someone works for a major network or publication that doesn’t always mean they know what they are talking about.

There is no way in hell, at least this season, that the Knicks would even entertain trade talks about Carmelo. Now if over the next year or two the team still stinks then that’s a different story but trading him just one year after signing that mega $122 million dollar contract is just not going to happen. Especially considering Melo will be a major reason that any possible free agents come to MSG next season.
