In memory of Sandra Bland’s unruly death. The city of Prairie View, Texas hope to dedicate a major street in her name.
The city of Prairie View hope to rename the road that Sandra Bland was stopped and arrested on which is “University Road.” To “Sandra Bland Parkway” in hopes to remind the law enforcement to always follow best practices when making stops on University Drive. It should take three to five years before the council votes on the subject.
University road is the street that leads Bland’s alma mater, Prairie View A&M University. Bland’s name will also be seen from the entrance of Prairie View A&M University to the U.S 290 business building. There will also be a park dedicated in Bland’s honor not far from the University.
Bland’s mother is please but states in the USA TODAY,
“This is the first step, the very first step. There’s still so much more that needs to be done.”
At least one member of Prairie View Council, voted Tuesday night to rename to road, felt that the city’s action came too soon. Paulette Matthews-Barnett- a council member in the city says,
“Maybe it should’ve been called Memorial Parkway, that way we’d include everyone and not just one.”
Barnett states a very good fact but the street is being named because of the tragic death of Bland. This is about taking a stand for a change. Making the street named after Bland has a better effect then naming it “Memorial Parkway.” But only time will time what name the council will decided on.
