According to NYC officials, Marquis Evans, 21, Damien Nieves, 35, and David Hannibal, 45, face trespassing and reckless endangerment charges. Apparently, the group pried their way into the sewer and carried metal detectors to help find valuables. A spokesman for the New York City Police Department said Marquise Evans, 21, removed a manhole cover on a street in Brooklyn late on Wednesday and enabled two other men to climb inside.

Evans who is a trainee at the city Department of Environmental Protection, which maintains the sewer system, was facing more charges including the aforementioned reckless endangerment and criminal facilitation. He virtually allowed himself and the two men to risk their lives below the Flatbush streets of Brooklyn. The agency told news reporters the trainee has been suspended pending the investigation.

New York City Police Commissioner William Bratton told reporters,”I know, damn sure, I wouldn’t be crawling through the sewers of New York, but these three evidently were.”

The Environmental Protection Agency said there are more than 6,000 miles of sewer pipes below New York City’s five boroughs and over 1 billion gallons of wastewater passes through the system each day. Thus, with the exception of some rats, waste and pipelines, the men did not discover anything they sought after.
