As much as it sounds like a scene taken straight from Orange is the New Black, it was the real deal when a drone dropped a package of drugs in the prison yard of Mansfield Correctional Facility in Ohio. Hit the jump for more details.
When the package dropped a brawl broke out between the inmates and corrections officers were forced to break up the fighting using pepper spray. Nine people landed in solitary as a result.
According to Mansfield records the package contained a variety of drugs including, 144.5 grams of tobacco, 64.5 grams of marijuana, and 6.6 grams of heroin. Prison officials, upon reviewing their surveillance footage, believe the drop was intended for a specific inmate however could not comment if the drop was gang related.
A spokeswoman for Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction said, “We have had other instances of unmanned aerial systems breaching security,” adding, “The agency’s top security adminstrators are taking a broad approach to increase awareness and detection of unmanned aerial systems.”
Following the drop over 200 inmates were subjected to a strip search. There were no injuries to any staff or inmates.
