Friday, Naomi Campbell was convicted of assault in a Sicilian court for scratching the eye of a paparazzo back in August of 2009.The super-model was given a six-month suspended prison sentence. Hit the jump for more.
According to reports, Campbell was stepping of a boat in Sicily with boyfriend Vladimir Doronin when photog Gaetano Di Giovanni began snapping photos of the couple. Campbell became angry and hit him with her purse. The bag wound up scratching Di Giovanni’s eye and landed him in the hospital with three days of recovery. Di Giovanni spoke on the incident saying “I had just started taking some shots of her and I did not expect such a violent reaction.”
Campbell and Di Giovanni were able to reach an agreement and he withdrew is charges against her, however the prosecutor Francesco Massara arranged for the trial to proceed for the public interest due to the level of the charges.
Campbell’s lawyer has promised to appeal the judge’s ruling saying “We are appealing the ruling surrounding the 2009 incident,” attorney Guido Carlo Alleva said in a statement obtained by E! News. “Due to the ongoing legal process, we cannot discuss the matter further at this time.”
Sadly this isn’t her first run in with the law. Back in 2007 Campbell served a 5 day community service sentence for an incident with her housekeeper. However there’s a big difference between community service and prison…hopefully it can all be worked out.
