Former University of Cincinnati police officer Ray Tensing has bonded out of jail.
He posted 10 percent of his $1 million bond, and according to his lawyer people from all over the country offered to help pay the $1 million bond.
Tensing left the jail at about 6:45 p.m. He’d been under suicide watch during his time behind bars. Tensing pleaded not guilty to murder Thursday morning after he was indicted Wednesday for the shooting death of 43-year-old Sam DuBose. Body camera video shows Tensing shoot DuBose in the head during a July 19 traffic stop in Mount Auburn.
Tensing had to make a mandatory $100,000 payment, 10 percent of his $1 million bond to secure his release until trial. “Ever since the bond was set, I’ve received calls from around the country from people wanting to contribute to it,“, attorney Stew Mathews said. “I think people feel like he’s getting railroaded here in Cincinnati. You’d have to be blind not to see that.”
According to USAToday DuBose was the 637th person killed in the United States by police since Jan. 1st. 19 of them were in Ohio. Since DuBose’s July 19 death, 27 others have died at the hands of police. More than a quarter of the 2015 total so far were black; only about 13% of the U.S. population identifies as black.
