The 22-year-old Powell was shot around 8:36 p.m. while sitting in a car with some friends in the driveway of his Toledo, Ohio, home, according to the Toledo Police Department.
According to witnesses, the shots came from a gold-colored car down the street. Powell was rushed to the University of Toledo Medical Center by private means.
Police said the suspects are three men who wore masks covering their faces.
Powell signed with the Cardinals on May 5 as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Iowa.
The Cardinals released a statement Saturday morning regarding Powell.
“We are aware that Damond Powell was the victim of a shooting last night in Toledo, where he remains hospitalized,” the team said. “We have been in communication with his family to offer whatever support and resources we can provide. We will continue to monitor and provide updates as appropriate.”
