According to authorities it took prison workers eighteen minutes to get to El Chapo’s cell after he was no longer visible on security footage. Interior Minister Miguel Angel Osorio Chong said “That is part of what the attorney general’s office is looking at — if the protocols were fulfilled in the correct times.”

The interior minister believes that the employees helped the drug lord break out of the prison for a second time. Several individuals including the prison director have already been fired.

El Chapo’s cell was under video surveillance 24 hours a day, however the tape had two blind spots one for showering and use of the toilet for privacy. El Chapo was able to squeeze into a hole under the shower in his cell and escape through a mile long tunnel. He can be seen twice on surveillance going into the shower fully clothed and bending behind the wall. The second time he went into the shower he did not return.

Currently, Mexico is offering $3.8 million reward for information leading to his capture.
