Coppell police say they have arrested 18-year-old Montay Kentrall Howard in connection with the shooting of former Coppell High School football player Charles West Sunday evening.
via Dallas Morning News:
According to the affidavit provided by police Tuesday afternoon, the 18-year-old West, who has committed to play football for Brigham Young University, was playing basketball with some buddies Sunday around 6 p.m. along the 400 block of Mockingbird Lane when he saw Howard walking toward him. West told police he knew Howard. In fact, he later told officers, the two of them had fought earlier in the day — “over money,” according to the arrest warrant.
West saw Howard was carrying a gun. At that point, says the warrant, “he began to run.” According to police, and the video that began making the rounds Sunday, Howard then opened fire and hit West one time, in his left bicep. West was taken to Parkland Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released.
Howard was arrested “without incident” around 1:30 Monday afternoon at his Coppell home. His name was withheld until West could be shown a photo line-up; he has since ID’d Howard as the shooter, according to police. Howard is now in the Carrollton jail, charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, a second-degree felony.
