The controversial Confederate Flag has been causing an uproar through out the country ever since domestic terrorist and Confederate Flag supporter, Dylann Roof, murdered the #TheCharleston9 at Emmanuel AME Baptist Church last month. Today, the South Carolina Senate voted to remove the flag from the State House grounds.
I’m sure a lot of pro-confederate flag southerners are not going to be too happy about the senate’s decision to remove the flag from the State House grounds but it is a reality that will eventually happen. It is surprising that a battle flag of soldiers that were fighting for independence from the union and legal slavery could be flying on a government campus anyway.
Going back a few weeks, the idea of having the flag removed seemed nearly impossible as the senate seemed to be torn on the subject. The flag has been raised on the State House grounds for over 50 years now and this is not the first time that people have called on the state to remove it.
Of course there is an issue amongst minorities when people proudly wave the Confederate Flag but the real issue is that state government is allowing it to fly on their grounds. It is almost like they do not understand the message that it sends to minorities, African Americans in particular.
Though the vote to remove the flag won, 37 to 3, there is still another step in the process. The motion to remove the flag will now have to go through the House of Representatives; however, it is very likely that it will pass there as well.
