It looks like we can add another crazy contract to the list of NBA players that are getting big bucks during this off season. Reports indicate that Marc Gasol has re-signed with the Memphis Grizzlies for over $100 Million.
If Marc Gasol were to leave the Grizzlies, I’m not sure how they would be able to recover from that. Like the Los Angeles Clippers, the starting Center for the Grizzlies is perhaps one of the most important roles. Unfortunately, for the Clippers they were not able to retain DeAndre Jordan.
Gasol is said to have re-signed with the Memphis Grizzlies for $110 million and will receive that over the next 5 years. As of a few days ago, NBA teams have given out a total of about $1.4 billion dollars and this has not even included one of the larger signings of Anthony Davis who will receive $145 million!
LeBron James, who’s contract will definitely be the max, has reportedly not signed a deal yet so there is still much room for that number to grow–as far as teams combined totals in new contracts go. The fact that a new TV deal is going to be coming into place giving teams much more money to throw around, is probably the exact reason why we are seeing so many large contracts during this summer’s free agency.
Although the Memphis Grizzlies lost to the NBA Champions in the Western Conference Semi-Finals, by retaining Marc Gasol, they will continue to be a force in the league. With the Western Conference continuing to build in competition, the Grizzlies could not afford to lose such a key piece like Gasol and the $110 million contract is definitely worth it!
