For those who don’t know, Juneteenth is a festival held annually on the nineteenth of June by African Americans (especially in the southern states), to commemorate emancipation from slavery in Texas on that day in 1865.

Considering Juneteenth is primarily celebrated in the south and Usher is from Dallas Texas, this shirt must of really resonated with the Essence festival crowd down in New Orleans, Louisiana. During Usher’s performance at the Essence Festival he walked out on stage with a black leather jacket, on the back of this jacket it read “Have We Truly achieved our independence”. When Usher took his jacket off at the essence festival you got to see his shirt that said “July Fourth” crossed out by red white and blue lines and underneath it saying “Juneteenth” in bold clear letters.
With all that is going on lately with the south Carolina incident, burning of black churches and debate over whether or not we should keep the confederate flag, Usher’s shirt at the Essence Festival was a breathe of fresh air.
