After the Charleston church shooting involving Confederacy supporter Dylann Roof, the flag became a symbol to take down around the world. Activist Newsome said that with everyone else marking the movement, she could no longer take seeing the flag outside of her Statehouse.
“I felt very strongly we needed that moment. We needed that moment to say, enough is enough. We want an end to the hate,” she said. “How much longer do we want to go forward like this isn’t it?” she added. “It’s time to reconcile ourselves with the past and move forward into a better future where everyone has equal rights.”

Bree Newsome is not in this fight alone. After supporters created the FreeBree hashtag, a GoFundMe account was created, which has accrued $125,000. As if that doesn’t show support, filmmaker and activist himself, Michael Moore offered to pay for all of Bree’s legal expenses. She definitely has a team beside her.
