The TV company Univision has decided to cut all ties with Donald Trump after he announced his run for presidency and pissed off quite a few people with his remarks about Mexican immigrants. Cutting ties with Mr. Trump includes pulling out of their deal with the Miss Universe Organization which Trump is part owner of. Details after the jump.
In a statement released Thursday, Univision said, “We will not be … working on any other projects tied to the Trump Organization.” This means they will no longer be airing the Miss USA Pageant which was set to air July 12th.
In their statement the company added, “At Univision, we see first-hand the work ethic, love for family, strong religious values and the important role Mexican immigrants and Mexican-Americans have had and will continue to have in building the future of our country.”
Columbian singer and performer for the pageant J Balvin, along with co-hosts Roselyn Sanchez and Cristián de la Fuente also pulled out of the pageant in protest of Trump’s remarks.
Balvin said,
“It was going to be my first performance on national [mainstream] television,” Balvin told Billboard. We’re talking about our roots, our culture, our values,” he said. “This isn’t about being punitive, but about showing leadership through social responsibility. His comments weren’t just about Mexicans, but about all Latins in general.”
He added, “I think music is to have fun. It’s for people to have a good time with. I’m no savior and I’m no Robin Hood, but in this case, I feel totally comfortable and responsible with my decision.”
Trump took to Twitter to defend his position saying, “Univision wants to back out of signed contract because I exposed the terrible trade deals that the U.S. makes with Mexico.” He also plans to sue Univision for hundreds of millions of dollars, for breaching their five year deal to air the pageant.
