According to Detroit police, at least one person is dead and nine others injured (10 shot) after an unidentified gunman opened fire on a basketball court during a block party on Detroit’s West Side.
As of 10 p.m. Saturday (6/20/15), police were not releasing the identity of the person who was killed.
A 46-year-old man is also in critical condition and two other men, 21 and 26 years old are in serious condition.
Witnesses said they grabbed their children and ran for their lives. A stroller and a child’s overturned chair were left behind after the deadly shooting. A deflated bounce house sat in one corner as Detroit police combed through the basketball court.
At least three of the victims who were shot were women, ages 30, 45, and 26.
Assistant Chief Steve Dolunt highlights, “I think one individual was the target, the others just happened to be at this party.”
Detroit City Councilwoman Mary Sheffield launched the “Occupy the Corner Detroit” initiative to combat violence, embolden and empower residents to improve the quality of their neighborhoods just a few days ago.
Police do not know the reason for the shooting and are still investigating.
