It looks like the past came back to bite Justin Bieber and Usher in the you know what. Find out what I mean after the jump.
A 2014 case against The Biebs and Usher has been reopened. According to Reuters, a R&B singer by the name of De Rico (real name Devin Copeland) is suing the duo for ripping of his song, “Somebody To Love.” This guy isn’t trying to get a little chump change either. He’s seeking $10 million in damages for copyright infringement.
Documentation states “beat pattern, time signature and similar chords and lyrics.” Although the original case was dismissed in 2014 by District Judge Arenda Wright Allen, it was revisited on June 18th by the Circuit Court Appeals in Richmond, VA. There was a 3-0 vote on the case which was convincing enough to be reopened.
Circuit Judge Pamela Harris stated this, “after listening to the Copeland song and the Bieber and Usher songs as wholes, we conclude that their are similar enough and also significant enough that a reasonable jury could find the songs intrinsically similar.” UH OH this doesn’t sound to good for Usher and Bieber. I guess we have to wait and see how this one plays out.
