An unknown number of gunmen opened fire on police outside of the Dallas Police Headquarters. Officers described an armored van crashing into a police car before speeding off and taking police on a 13 mile chase that ended with more gunfire.Police remain in a standoff with a suspect. According to Police reports, the suspect James Boulware, who began shooting at Dallas police around 12:30AM has been shot by a sniper. The bullet struck the suspect through the windshield of the van. Police are using robots to check if he has be killed. Boulware was in contact with police via cell phone and claimed he was hurt. Police say that the suspect has not been heard from in a few hours as of 7:30AM. Police will be using robots due to claims that the van was rigged with explosives. Police are unsure of the motive of the suspect but Police Chief Brown stated, “(Police) believe this suspect meant to kill officers and took time to discharge that weapon multiple times to accomplish this goal”
Police chased the military style van to a Jack-in-the-Box restaurant parking lot where gunfire continued to be exchanged between the suspects and police. No officers were injured during the gunfire. Police also uncovered four bags that contained explosive devices including pipe bombs which police were able to detonate. SWAT teams are using robots to examine the van for possible explosive devices.
Witnesses told police there could be as many as four suspects involved in the attacks. Residents who live within the perimeter of the police headquarters have been evacuated.
According to Police Chief David Brown, negotiations with the driver of the van is still on going. The driver told officers that the police are to blame for him losing custody of his son and “accusing him of being a terrorist,” said Brown. The driver has been identified as James Boulware, a white male 5’10. According to 911 records the man called earlier that evening ranting and claiming the van was rigged with C-4 explosives
Dallas Police are working closely wit the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms.
