We all know our very own Funkmaster Flex LOVES cars, so it was only right that he connected and chopped it up with NASCAR. On Sunday, he served as the honorary pace car driver for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Axalta “We Paint Winners” 400 at Pocono Raceway. He also was spinning records during the driver introductions for Sunday’s race and later on did a little Q&A with Nascar.com.
“Back in the day I had a couple of my favorite drivers. Richard Petty is my all-time, ultimate favorite driver. I also liked Cale Yarborough, Bobby Allison, Ned Jarrett. That’s my cream of the crop, classic drivers. Of course, I like Dale (Earnhardt) Jr. as well. I like Dale Sr.”
“I’m a car guy. I got 20 muscle cars so being into music, I got my music fans and people into me DJing and the rappers who love me and stuff like that.”
Here are some other highlights from NASCAR.com’s chat with Flex, prior to him leading the field to green at the Tricky Triangle.
On who his favorite active driver is:
“Dale Jr. is my favorite by far. Not just his talent. I know he doesn’t win as many races as he used to, but I love his style and what he’s about. He’s a young spirit. He’s into the music that I am into. I love it.”
On who he was hoping to meet at Pocono:
“Dale, I’ve met before. Dale, I want to see first. Jeff Gordon, of course I want to see. Tony Stewart. Tony’s a character. … You know something about Tony, I never want to see him lose. I don’t root to see him in the back. I’m alright with who he is and I want to see him up front. Not win, though, I just want him up front, top five. I want to see Dale first.”
On his pre-race playlist:
“I was going to mix it up. I don’t think they’ve had that much, somebody DJing for the drivers. I’m excited to play for them. This is my first time out here at this track.”
On tracks he’s been to:
“Homestead, Daytona, here (Pocono), Talladega. Those are the places that I’ve been.”
On attending races:
“I love the sport. One thing I learned being at the race, the TV shows it no justice like being there. It’s impossible, the experience is totally different. The TV experience is good too because the cameras have become so incredible.”
Flex also snapped some selfies with NASCAR Vice Chairman Mike Helton, Kurt Busch and his favorite driver of all time, Richard Petty.
