Government and commercial labs in all nine states were suppose to receive inactive or dead anthrax spores for research, however, it did not work that way. Since being the first to recieve the product, Maryland contacted the Pentagon. They have been cleared of any harm.

“There is no known risk to the general public, and there are no suspected or confirmed cases of anthrax infection in potentially exposed lab workers,” said Army Col. Steve Warren, a Pentagon spokesman.

Apparently, the “DoD lab was working as part of a DoD effort to develop a field-based test to identify biological threats in the environment,” which is why the live anthrax spores were sent out.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are working with both, state and federal officials to conduct and investigation with all nine labs that received the sample, said CDC spokesman Jason McDonald. “The ongoing investigation includes determining if the labs also received other live samples, epidemiologic consultation, worker safety review, laboratory analysis and handling of laboratory waste,” he adds.
