The Los Angeles Lakers have the No. 2 pick in the 2015 NBA Draft and have a chance to get a game changer like Karl Anthony-Towns or Jahlil Okafor but other than that, the team reportedly has no plans to continue re-building through the draft.
via NBA writer Howard Beck:
Mitch Kupchak tells us on NBA Sunday Tip, “We don’t have …. the time to methodically and slowly build through the draft.”
The Lakers will have max-level cap space and will use it to go after free agents such as Rajon Rondo, Kevin Love or LaMarcus Aldridge. The next upcoming season will reportedly be Kobe Bryant’s last and they’re looking for someone else to become the face of the franchise.
If they strike out on free agents again like they did this past year with Carmelo Anthony, LeBron James and Chris Bosh, they can’t really build through the draft even if they wanted to. They still owe next year’s pick to the Sixers, unless it falls in the top three. They don’t have any more first-round picks after this year until 2017.
With Julius Randle and others coming back from injury, along with whoever they pick in this year’s draft should make the team much better but it’ll still take much more to compete in the tough Western Conference.
