The hate crimes unit for Long Island Police is investing an anonymous letter that was sent to a black family asking them to leaving, stating, ‘You don’t belong here.’ because according to the writer ‘Lindenhurst is 84 percent white.’
The resident Darcell Copes has lived in her home for about two years. She shares the home with her three grown up children and five young grandchildren.
The letter was typed in call caps and said, “ATTN: AFRICAN-AMERICAN FAMILY THIS IS COMING FROM LINDENHURST COMMUNITY.YOU DON’T BELONG HERE,” the letter continued. “PLEASE LEAVE LINDENHURST AS SOON AS YOU CAN. IT WILL BE BETTER FOR ALL OF US.”
The letter told the woman to find a town “WHERE THERE ARE MORE PEOPLE LIKE YOU,” and was topped off with, “SORRY IF THIS IS RUDE, BUT IT’S THE TRUTH.”
Copes said, “I went from being fearful, protecting my family, to being totally confused, and wanted to know who and why,” she continued “Today, it becomes even deeper: is it someone in the school district, is it the guy at the corner store, is it my neighbor down the street? Where?”
Along with calling the police the family uploaded the letter on Facebook. Since the letter was received on May 19th it has gotten more than 1,500 shares. The Copes family say they have gotten a lot of support from their community but they are not surprised that racism is so present in 2015.
