In a recent segment of Fox News, Geraldo Rivera spoke on the murder rate in Baltimore City and commented that black lives only matter to black people when they are killed by white police officers. Not at all surprising, being that the segment was on Fox, but I think Rivera may be missing the entire point of the #BlackLivesMatter movement. Click more to check out the video!
We keep hearing this saying, all lives matter or when the murder rate in an urban area is high we also hear that blacks are not concerned with those murders not committed by those employed to serve and protect; but Rivera and Fox News are missing one major point. When minorities kill one another, they are usually arrested and charged for their crimes right away and in most instances, sentenced for their crimes. When it comes to police involved killings of unarmed black people, the same protocol cannot be attested for–that is until State Attorney Marilyn Mosby took charge.
As we know, the six officers involved in the death of Freddie Gray were arrested, charged, and indicted but this is unusual when the murder involves police against blacks. Normally we see a long drawn out process but the fact that this was done swiftly, raises concerns for many people like Geraldo Rivera.
Geraldo On Baltimore City…
The movement behind #BlackLivesMatter says that we will hold police accountable for their actions and we cannot continue to let them walk free for killing those that are unarmed. I think it is a general consensus that black people are concerned with the safety of their cities but the fact of the matter is that in most cases those suspected of killing are held accountable; whereas, police officers–in recent history–have not been held to the same standard.
Unfortunately, the calls for bettering black communities among those in the spotlight as well as efforts to bring various communities together often go unheard by individuals like Rivera and Fox News because they do not want to cover such stories.
