The first time in more than a decade that a police officer was killed in the line of duty in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Late Saturday evening two officers were shot and killed during a traffic stop. Read more details after the jump.
Officers Benjamin J. Deen, 34, and Liquori Tate, 24, were making a traffic stop when the were shot. Both officerss were taken to the hospital but neither of them survived.
Mayor Johnny Dupree released a statement saying, “The men and women who go out every day to protect us, the men and women who go out every day to make sure that we are safe, were turned on tonight.”
The suspects of the shooting are Marvin and Curtis Banks. Following the shooting the two suspects stole a police car in which they attempted to flee. The two men were arrested. Police also arrested a woman who was with the two men at the time of the shooting. It is still unknown if she was involved in the shooing.
Liquori Tate recently graduated the police academy and Benjamin Deen was name Officer of the Year in 2012.
The visited the families of both officers in the hospital ad said, “You have to search for words you say to family members how much we love them; we are here to support them,” he said. The city is making grief counselors available to the slain men’s fellow officers.
Deen leaves behind a wife and two children.
