Earlier in the week, police of Charleston County, South Carolina shot a man who called them to report about a home invasion at his mother’s home.
NBC News stated that Bryan Heyward, who was 26 years old called 911 thursday morning from Hollywood, South Carolina to let authorities know that there were armed suspects that were trying to invade his mothers home. Then two deputies from the Charleston County Police arrived and were informed that gun shots were fired and that the suspects had fled through the back end of the house. Then that’s when the deputies had seen Mr. Heyward and mistakenly took him as one of the suspects. They described what had happened when they saw Hayward:
“Then Heyward, 26, appeared in the back doorway, holding a .40-caliber handgun that he’d been using to protect himself, Cannon said. One deputy, Keith Tyner, told him to drop it.
Heyward did not immediately do so. The deputy fired twice, hitting Heyward in the neck with a single round, according to the sheriff’s office.
It was not clear how much time elapsed between the warning and the shot.”
NBC News stated that Heyward had remained in Medical University of South Carolina’s ICU (Intensive Care Unit). It was then said he was unable to move is lower body and had a hard time speaking. NBC includes that on the trip to the hospital Heyward had spoken with an investigator:
“A 20-minute recording of the conversation was played at Friday’s meeting between police and community leaders.
The officer did it, but it was an accident, Heyward told the investigator, according to the recording, adding, I should have put the gun down, but I didn’t.
Heyward also told police he had exchanged gunfire with two suspects who fled the home on bicycles, authorities said.”
A Thomas Zachery Brown who was one of the actual suspects of the home invasion was then arrested hours after the shooting took place. He was charged with attempted murder and burglary, but the Heyward family is concerned more so with the fact of the deputies wearing microphones but there still has not been any audio released from the shooting.
