FAA spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said a Piper PA-32 aircraft departed Runway 3 Left at PDK, then crashed about a mile away. The plane a took off from Dekalb Peachtree Airport Friday morning in Atlanta at about 10 am and crashed about a mile away on I-285 near Peachtree Industrial Boulevard. Emergency responders arrived at the scene about a minute after learning of the crash. All four people on bored were killed on impact. Grady Byrd of Asheville, North Carolina, told and Atlanta NBC affiliate that the victims were his son, two grandsons, and the fiancee of one of his grandsons. Eastbound lanes remain closed but westbound lanes have just reopened. Reportedly the pilot came on the airplanes PA System and calmly said “Hey, we are going down”
Witnesses say they felt the impact of the plane crash on the interstate, but somehow the pilot avoided hitting any vehicles.”The impact was large, like a bomb being dropped,” said witness Don McGee. Another witness, Blake Green, says the plane propeller flew off on impact. He said the impact sounded like a bomb.
