It seems as though the Freddie Gray riots have inspired reform within police tactics. Council Woman Mary Cheh has proposed a bill to change current legislation, which she believes is too broad in describing “Assault On A Police Officer”. She says the Chief of Police backs her in her efforts to stop the unfair amount of serious charges associated with minor actions.
The current law allows citizens to be charged with “Assault On A Police Officer” for doing things like closing a door to flee from the officer, or stiffing up to avoid being handcuffed. Outraged protestors are likely to stiffen up while being arrested, and many of them have been charged; facing up to 6 months in jail. Acts like these can hardly be classified as assault on individuals armed with weapons and trained for combat. I hope her bill passes!
