The hit record was written by Ashanti herself and produced by Aurelius, Mark Debarge and Irv Gotti. In the interview Ashanti revealed that the inspiration for the song came from Irv Gotti and a situation he was going through with a female.
The single was released in 2002 and was so popular that it landed Ashanti’s career and would be one of the best selling singles of the 21st century.
The singer also talks about everything that went into making this song such a big hit. She said that Gotti and Diddy would go back and forth about who exactly was the influence for the record, since it samples DeBarge’s “Stay With Me.” Diddy would argue that Notorious B.I.G’s “One More Chance (Remix.)” was the influence for the record.
She also said that Jay-Z was supposed to be on the song and was ready to lay something down when Gotti changed his mind. She said, Gotti said, ”That’s typical,I’m not going to do the typical R&B record and get the big rapper to co-sign it.” Ashanti wound up writing her own verse in place of Jay-Z at Gotti’s request.
