A Baltimore prosecutor announced criminal charges against six police officers for their transgressions causing the death of Freddie Gray. The state’s attorney for Baltimore Marilyn Mosby comes from five generations of police officers and was recently sworn in as state’s attorney. As she campaigned, Ms. Mosby broached the topic of police brutality while expressing her displeasure for excessive force.
The attorney said, “police brutality is completely inexcusable. I’m going to apply justice fairly, even to those who wear a badge”. It’s going to be a painstaking task for the police union to defend Baltimore police.
In a open letter to the Baltimore State Attorney, the city union’s president said that, “none of the officers involved are responsible for the death of (Freddie) Gray”. The Baltimore City Fraternal Order of Police President Gene Ryan further expands, “to the contrary, at all times, each of the officers diligently balanced their obligations to protect Mr. Gray and discharge them duties to protect the public”. Also in the letter, Ryan requested that a special independent prosecution be appointed to look into the case. It was only a matter of time until the public heard the opinion of the police union that defends Baltimore police.
