Whether we are driving, working, or watching TV, most of our day consists of many hours of sitting down. A new study that is being done in the Annals of Internal Medicine found that sitting down increases our chances of getting a disease or a condition that can kill you. After analyzing 47 studies of people sitting down, researchers from Toronto came to this conclusion. The researchers adjusted their data to incorporate the amount that someone exercises and found that the sitting we do in a day still outweighs the benefit we get from exercising.
The studies showed that sitting all day can lead to death from cardiovascular issues and cancer as well as cause chronic conditions such as Type 2 diabetes. According to the World Health Organization, physical inactivity has been found as the fourth-leading risk factor for death for people all around the world. Sitting for eight to 12 hours or more a day increased your risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 90%. One way to help you sit less is to be aware of how much you are sitting or standing up or walking around for a minute or three once every half an hour.
