UFC champion Jon Jones was officially named as a suspect in a hit-and-run accident that left a pregnant woman injured. Jones dodged the police for a while before turning himself in and bailing himself out just a few hours later. Jones is facing felony charges for leaving the scene and also because of the extent of the injury to the pregnant woman who reportedly broke her arm. His problems go beyond criminal charges as he is now out of a job… for now.
Jones has just been suspended indefinitely by the UFC and it is effective immediately, which means he will not fight in UFC 187. Rumble Johnson will now fight Daniel Cormier instead on May 23rd.
In addition to his suspension, Jones is officially stripped of his light heavyweight title which he had defended eight straight times, the third-longest streak in UFC history.
The UFC issued a statement saying, “As a result of the charge and other violations of the Athlete Code of Conduct Policy, the organization believes it is best to allow Jones time to focus on his pending legal matters.”
“While there is disappointment in the recent charges, the organization remains supportive of Jones as he works through the legal process.”
Jones was fined $25,000 and checked into a drug treatment facility after testing positive for cocaine in December. Jones reiterated he does not have a drug problem but marijuana and marijuana pipes were found in the vehicle he allegedly abandoned after the accident.
