A new bill in Hawaii hopes to prevent anyone under the age of 21 from smoking, buying or possessing traditional and electronic cigarettes.
It will be the first state to raise the legal smoking age to 21. The bill cleared its final legislative with approval from the state Senate and it will now go to Gov. David Ige for his decision. A spokeswoman for Ige said he wasn’t immediately available for comment. Those caught breaking the rules would face fines or community service. Studies say that 90 percent of daily smokers started smoking before age 19.
