Authorities have located the mother of a dead newborn found on the campus of Muskingum University in Ohio. The Muskingum County sheriff confirms the mother of the baby is a student at the school.
Wednesday night the body of a newborn was found on Muskingum University campus. Police and emergency responders were called to the residential building just after 9 p.m. and remained on the scene throughout the evening.
The investigation is ongoing and police are waiting for the results of the autopsy and toxicology reports. So far the The Muskingum County sheriff’s office does know the mother’s name but are not releasing it at this time. The have confirmed that she is a student at the University and spoke with her that evening.
In 2001, Ohio put the Safe Haven Law into effect, which allows women who are not ready for motherhood, to leave newborns at hospitals, police stations, or fire stations, voluntarily and without prosecution. The newborn is then placed in the care of a children-services agency.
This is not the first time a baby has been abandoned on this campus. According to Zanesville Times Recorder, in 2002 a student gave birth to a baby boy in her on-campus apartment. She disposed of the child in the trash while still alive.
