The Parents of Mike Brown, the unarmed black teen killed by a white officer last year in Ferguson, Missouri, have filed a civil suit against the city of Ferguson. Anthony Gray and Daryl Parks, lawyers for the family have said that the civil lawsuit will consist of the same evidence that was shown to the grand jury that decided not to charge Officer Darren Wilson in the shooting.
With civil lawsuits, even though the evidence will be the same, the burden of proof is much lower. Grey said, “The civil lawsuit will rely on pretty much the same evidence, but it will be cast differently. Parks is also quoted as saying to CNN, “The jury in the civil lawsuit will be asked to make a determination based on a lower burden of proof — by a preponderance of evidence, rather than beyond a reasonable doubt.”
Back in March, Mike Brown Sr. and Lesly McSpadden the slain teen’s parents, released a statement:
“We are encouraged that the DOJ (Dept Of Justice) will hold the Ferguson Police Department accountable for the pattern of racial bias and profiling they found in their handling of interactions with people of color. It is our hope that through this action, true change will come not only in Ferguson, but around the country. If that change happens, our son’s death will not have been in vain.”
Mike Brown’s parents file civil suit … it is about time. Hopefully, change will come, but not soon enough by the looks of the recent events in Baltimore with the death of Freddie Grey
