Some people (including the players) have a problem with the media choosing the winners of major awards such as MVP.  The players feel some of them don’t have the best relationship with the media, and that they play against each other each night so they would have a better idea of which player is better.  That makes sense, so the NBA players association announced on Tuesday that they were going to host a NBAPA Players Choice Awards at Las Vegas Summer League this year. The awards would include MVP and be voted on by players.  While players like Kevin Durant and LeBron James are all for it, John Wall isn’t and explained the problem with players voting amongst themselves.

“No,” John Wall said when asked if he had voted yet, “and I probably won’t.”

“The media and the fans, those people have their own opinion. That’s the key part. They’re watching from the inside out.

“As basketball players, we know who the players are, but sometimes your pride and ego come in and you don’t want to see that person get an award, so it don’t really bother me.

“[With] us making votes, you’re going to have people saying they are MVP and the best player in the league, and so it’s never going to be a fair race, in my opinion.”

He has a point.  For example, LeBron James said he’s voting for himself for the MVP award; while he’s certainly in the running, the award clearly belongs to Stephen Curry or James Harden (more so the former in my opinion).  Still the sentiment in having the players voting is right, we’ll just have to see what the outcome is going to be.
