The Philadelphia 76ers traded for center JaVale McGee at the trade deadline but have now released him in time for him to sign with contender.
The Philadelphia 76ers have agreed to waive JaVale McGee in time for him to sign with a playoff team, a person with knowledge of the situation told USA TODAY Sports.
Despite having buyout talks with the team in recent days, McGee didn’t wind up giving back any of his salary owed ($11.2 million for this season, $12 million for next season).
McGee, who was taken 18th overall by the Washington Wizards out of Nevada, has averaged 8.4 points and 5.5 rebounds per game in seven seasons. He played in six games for the 76ers, averaging 3.0 points and 2.2 rebounds in 10.2 minutes.
So essentially McGee won big time. He not only got to keep all his money, he also gets to sign with a championship contender, if any of them are interested. Although he is a Shaqtin’ a Fool hall of famer, McGee could prove useful as an athletic big man off the bench for any team in need. As for the Sixers, they were mainly interested in the first round pick that came along with McGee in the deal.
