While mourning of the 3-year anniversary of Trayvon’s death gets carried out in different ways, some are choosing to keep a full court press on the man acquitted of all charges as a result. Going on the offensive Melissa Harris Perry: I Hope Trayvon Whooped the Sh*t Out of Zimmerman is an actual quote from her speech at Cornell University earlier this week.
There’s a lot of despair, indifference and anger from the recent Department of Justice announcement to dismiss any hopes of charges in the killing of unarmed Florida teenager Trayvon Martin. A day earlier than this however, MSNBC host Melissa Harris Perry: I Hope Trayvon Whooped the Sh*t Out of Zimmerman was heard at Cornell’s Martin Luther King Jr. Commemorative Lecture (to be a fly on the wall at that event):
“I hope [Martin] tried to stay alive. I hope he knew that he lived in a state with a ‘Stand Your Ground’ law. And I hope he whooped the sh*t out of George Zimmerman,” Harris-Perry said. “And it’s not disreputable because he encountered a stranger who was prepared to kill him, and you know how I know? Because he killed him.”
Melissa Harris Perry: I Hope Trayvon Whooped the Sh*t Out of Zimmerman comments mark a 3-year full circle of what Attorney General Eric Holder has called a “devastating tragedy” that however did not meet “the high standard for a federal hate crime prosecution.”
The passionate spiel of Melissa Harris Perry: I Hope Trayvon Whooped the Sh*t Out of Zimmerman was out of her speech entitled “We Can’t Breathe: The Continuing Consequences of Inequality,” which has also been published in the scholarly Cornell Review. The school newspaper’s blog counteracted, saying it was all “an hour-long comedy routine” and “an embarrassment for Cornell.” Of course now she’s also accused of being a racist.
Were the blog’s comments a shot at #BlackLivesMatter or do you agree with them and is she being racist? Was she was just out of line or was Melissa right to speak the way she did? Check the vid.
