As expected the New York Knicks will officially rule Carmelo Anthony out for the rest of the season.
Anthony has been suffering with a knee injury throughout the season and it was suggested by many that he shut it down since the Knicks have no hopes of making the playoffs and are in the hunt for a high draft pick.
It was assumed that he would stick it out to play in and host NBA All-Star weekend which was held in New York City, which he did. Now that that’s over with it’s time for him to shut it down.
Via ESPN’s NBA Insider Marc Stein:
ESPN sources say that Knicks will officially rule Carmelo Anthony out for rest of the season later Wednesday. Carmelo headed for knee surgery in the near future, I’m told, and will be ruled out for rest of the season as he hinted during AS Weekend.
Anthony has been hesitant about getting the knee surgery but it’s obvious that he needs to as the problem only seems to be getting worse.
Anthony averaged 24.2 points, 6.6 rebounds and 3.1 assists while playing in 40 games this season. The Knicks have a first round draft pick and plenty of cap space. We’ll see if they’re able to turn things around next season.
