In honor of fashion week: R.I.P. to Koos van den Akker. The “master of couture collage” is notably known for his design of the wild n’ crazy sweaters worn by Bill Cosby. No matter how one may feel about Cosby at the moment, there will forever be three things he’s know for; 1. pudding 2. comedy and 3. THOSE SWEATERS. Koos van den Akker, who has passed at the age of 75, is the man to thank for the latter.

While his passing seemed to have been kept on the hush, Koos van den Akker will be a remembered man. The designer, “died over a sewing machine, figuratively,” said Puck Meunier, owner of Koos & Co said – van den Akker was the designer of the store. Three weeks prior to his February 3rd death, the designer was rushed to Mount Sinai Beth Israel Hospital.
Other than Cosby, Koos van den Akker had also worked with celebrities, Glenn Close, Magic Johnson, Chita Rivera, Brooke Shields, Barbara Walters and Josephine Premice, the actress who had ordered the original Cosby-worn sweater, as a gift. Those sweaters “were works of art whether you liked them or not,” Cosby said to the New York Times. “I have purchased and worn approximately 14 of his works of art,” he said. Who can deny that as a kid, those were pieces of art. One of the reasons we all liked Bill was for his ‘unique’ sense of style.
