He doesn’t want to call it a rant, so we’ll call Trey Songz’ latest voice of opinion his truth. “I don’t rant,” he goes in after a long evening of watching Sam Smith take home award after award, during the 57th annual Grammys. Like many other award shows before and after them, the Grammys shaded many of our favorite artists – Beyoncé fans can attest to that one. Trey Songz, who was not one of the nominees this year, is opening up about why he believes this is so. Popularity, of course. Covering up the, “culture for popularity” as he would tweet it.

Check out more of the what Trey has to say, after the jump.

“10 years I been able to feed my family and have the support of so many people, just for doing what I would do anyway for NOTHING. Music,” the Virginia-born crooner begins in a series of tweets. “So please, don’t take this next sentiment as salt, shade, envy, etc. The Grammys shortchange culture for popularity every year.” Well, duh! While the “culture” he tweets of isn’t in plain view, we all know what he means. However, this is where black-cultered shows like The BET Hip Hop Awards come in. It’s there. Yes, speak your truth about the treatment of hip hop and R&B being cast aside, but also recognize that you can advance. S**t, create your own awards show – I’ll help. Build it yourself, and the recognition you deserve will prevail.
