Mark your calendars because the Largest Asteroid to Pass Earth Coming Next Monday and the next one won’t come until 2027! As far as our safety is concerned…

NASA says we’ll be totally safe, no major threats even though “2004 BL86,” the Largest Asteroid to Pass Earth Coming Next Monday! (I know, should’ve been a better name).

You’re wondering, doesn’t this happen all the time? Yes and no. There are lots of asteroids that pose a threat to Earth — about 550 as of today. None are predicted to hit anytime soon.

Sources say the Largest Asteroid to Pass Earth Coming Next Monday, approximately 745,000 miles from the planet is larger than average and fairly rare to be coming this close. It’ll be more visible than anything we’ve seen in a long time and that alone has a lot of people hype. NASA Scientists say they’ll use the opportunity to observe and get to know them more, using snap radar-generated images from the Deep Space Network antenna at Goldstone, California and the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico. Why does any of this matter?:

“Asteroids are something special. Not only did asteroids provide Earth with the building blocks of life and much of its water, but in the future, they will become valuable resources for mineral ores and other vital natural resources. They will also become the fueling stops for humanity as we continue to explore our solar system. There is something about asteroids that makes me want to look up.”
