NBC Launches NBCBLK for Black Culture News

NBC Launches NBCBLK for Black Culture News and officially becomes the latest news conglomerate to feature “the black experience.” From politics in foreign lands to what’s happening in our own United States, the word on the streets of major cities, down to your own hood, NBC aims to echo the BET phrase, “we got you.”

NBC Launches NBCBLK for Black Culture News to praise, intrigue, indifference and of course…haters. With a “soft launch” on January 12th and now in full swing, the spin-off is branding itself as “Elevating America’s conversation about black identity, politics and culture.” But already NBCBLK’s newly minted platform is receiving less than favorable reviews. Not for it’s content or approach either–for its sheer existence.

The Twitter-verse as usual is on top of NBC Launches NBCBLK for Black Culture News before most. Some comment on its birth as a byproduct of “white guilt,” saying:

“The @NBCBLK platform is obviously NBC’s response to having been forced to run black interest stories in their main news cycle more often…” [@mecjagger]

While others dismiss it for being devisive in a time when we need to be coming together:

“It’d be more effective & progressive if mainstream news outlets INCLUDED black issues & news instead of SEPARATING them #NBCBLK” [@ivieeve]

Other’s condemn it totally as racist and irrelevant:

“NBC News Launches Racist NBCBLK News Channel–Now The End Begins” [@Lightontruthusa]

Some are just confused, jokingly but seriously asking if you’re not black, can you watch it??? So there you have it. Any good reviews you ask? Of course. When you look at the content and stories, such as “How Letter Writing is Helping Fathers Reach Their Sons,” “Apple Defends MLK Holiday Policy” and “Beyond Black and White: Asian-American Memories of Selma,” you can see they ARE perhaps taking an area of news that we DON’T see on mainstream news. So…can we really be mad??? Check the gallery for the tweet action on this.
