The Girl Scouts Go Digital with their newest “Digital Cookie” program to the delight (and dismay) of many. Everyone knows the age old hustles of community bake sales, selling candy in mass transit, and of course the king (or shall we say queen or princess of them all)–the annual Girl Scout Cookie Drive. But with 21st century life comes the demand for technology and convenience, so change is upon us!
The hype is live and so is some hate for the announcement that the Girl Scouts Go Digital and usher the large nonprofit’s traditional cookie sale operation into the digital era. While it seems like a natural progression, many are wondering if the move will undermine the organization’s lessons of leadership, teamwork, communication and esteem for young girls. Emanuella Grinberg of CNN had this to say:
“Plenty has changed since I left the game more than a decade ago. For the first time this cookie season, some Girl Scout troops are using online ordering in addition to paper forms as part of the new Digital Cookie program. Part of me is jealous, but mostly, I’m skeptical. What about the value of the face-to-face sale? Would that get lost in digital interactions?”
Girl Scouts Go Digital and though offline sales will still go on, we now have the option to go online (and claim a troop and troop member) to stock our personal stash. The lifted ban on online sales is also due to safety concerns of door-to-door selling. To supplement the organization provides “cookie rallies,” where lessons in business finance and marketing are taught–definitely a crucial progression as online marketing and branding is a huge part of our world now. (That’s too lit tho!)
What do you think of the Girl Scouts Go Digital–Will the “digital cookie entrepreneurs” be missing out on an experience or are they on point with this?
