The Atlanta Hawks are up for sale and several groups are already coming together to try and buy the team. There’s usually a formula to these things. You need guys with a lot of money, and usually at least one person who’s well known in the city that can be a minority owner and win over the fans. It was done with Jay Z and the Brooklyn Nets and happened more permanently with Magic Johnson and the Dodgers and Justin Timberlake with the Grizzlies. Now for the Atlanta Hawks we have former Atlanta Brave and baseball icon, Hank Aaron.
via ESPN:
Former baseball home run king and Atlanta icon Hank Aaron has joined a group of current owners from the NBA, Major League Soccer and Italian soccer’s storied Serie A that is seeking to purchase the Atlanta Hawks, according to league sources.
Sources told ESPN.com that the group is spearheaded by Memphis Grizzlies minority owner and vice chairman Steve Kaplan, Indonesian billionaire sports and media magnates Erick Thohir and Handy Poernomo Soetedjo and former Grizzlies CEO Jason Levien, who is the current managing general partner of DC United in MLS.
There are other Atlanta groups looking to buy the team and eventually it will all come down to who makes the highest bid.
