While the officers were involved in a $60 meth operation, APD Lt. Greg Brachle shot a fellow officer who remains in critical condition. Why he pulled the trigger remains a mystery. Chief Gordon Eden says, “They were out there working this case as a result of the community outcry of the narcotics activity that was occuring in this area.” During the drug bust gone wrong, two undercover officers were inside a black car in the parking lot of a McDonald’s when they had made the small purchase from suspects Damien Bailey and Edmond Vester. “Both officers involved were working in plain clothes and in an undercover capacity,” says Eden.
“The investigation continues and the information is still very limited as our investigators from our multi-jurisdictional task force continues to do the interviews,” Chief Eden says in a follow-up on the officer’s condition. Since being rushed into the University of New Mexico Hospital, “His condition has not changed, and has been taken in for another surgery.”
While we hope that the officer makes it through, it will be interesting to see how this is going to play out.
