Everyone knew the New York Knicks wouldn’t be good this year but Phil Jackson declared they would be a playoff team. Well instead, they have the worst start in franchise history and now the Knicks new president is taking responsibility while trying to hush the “fire Derek Fisher” chants.
The Knicks have a 5-35 record and are officially the worst team in the league, yes even worse than the Philadelphia 76ers. Although there’s a severe lack of talent, some people also attribute the Knicks woes to first time head coach, Derek Fisher.
Jackson spoke with the media before a Saturday afternoon contest against the Hornets — one in which the Knicks trailed by as many as 45 points — and took full responsibility for the way this season has played out.
From the New York Post (via ProBasketballTalk):
The Knicks president spoke with a humbleness we haven’t seen since he started winning championships in Chicago in the 1990s, in what he called “a mea culpa.” …
“I take responsibility for it, and the fans, I want them to leave Derek [Fisher] alone in this regard,” Jackson said. “It’s not his fault.”
“Obviously I didn’t do the right thing in picking the group of guys that were here,” Jackson added.
Jackson has been trying to fix that by basically cleaning house. He traded J.R Smith and Iman Shumpert, there’s rumors he’s looking to trade Jose Calderon (which will be difficult due to his contract), and Amare Stoudemire and Andrea Bargnani’s contracts will come off the books at the end of this season.
