New Year’s Stampede Leaves 35 Dead, 42 Injured in China as masses of crowds gathered at the Bund in Shanghai’s Chen Yi Square. Though it’s usual for crowds to gather in celebration of the new year, investigation is still under way as to what caused the scene to take a turn for the worst. Some reports have now taken to ‘blame it on the rain,’ citing fake US dollars being thrown into the crowds moments before the stampede ensued. (Damn). This development is also still under investigation.
China has the largest population all the countries in the world with over 1.3 billion people, so social and political crowd control is a constant issue. Authorities in Shanghai cancelled the New Year’s Eve 3D laser display a week ago due to their anticipation of the crowds.
